Konsulat Jenderal Republik Indonesia (KJRI) in Hamburg, Germany, held the Eid al-Fitr prayer for Indonesian Muslims in a closed hall, followed by a communal breakfast. According to a press release from KJRI Hamburg, they celebrated Eid al-Fitr on 30th March 2025, a day earlier than in Indonesia, based on the method of calculation (hisab) adopted since 2008. This method is also used by organizations like the Zentralrat der Muslime in Deutschland (ZMD), one of the largest Islamic organizations in Germany.
Basis for Early Celebration
-
Reason for Early Celebration: The decision to hold Eid al-Fitr prayers in Germany was made at the beginning of Ramadan, following astronomical calculations, without waiting for the moon sighting (rukyat) as done in Indonesia.
-
Approval: The method has been endorsed by the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and provides certainty for Muslim communities in non-Muslim majority countries to plan for Eid festivities in advance.
Eid Prayers in Hamburg
-
Indoor Venue: Due to the 6 degrees Celsius temperature in Hamburg, the Eid prayer was conducted indoors.
-
Multiple Sessions: KJRI Hamburg, in collaboration with various Indonesian Muslim groups, organized two prayer sessions at 08:00 and 09:00 CEST to accommodate the large Indonesian community.
Participation and Celebrations
-
Attendance: Over 800 Indonesian citizens, including those from different cities like Nordhausen, attended the prayers, breakfast, and social gathering at KJRI Hamburg, exceeding the room capacity of about 250 people.
-
Testimonials: Attendees, such as Ummi who had been in Germany for only 6 months, and Wira, who traveled 4 hours by train from Nordhausen, expressed joy in celebrating Eid al-Fitr together with fellow Indonesians.
Consul General Renata Siagian highlighted the increasing number of Indonesian Muslims participating in the Eid celebrations at the consulate, emphasizing the early planning enabled by the hisab method for better coordination of religious observances and family gatherings.
